Add this to another station Dr. Grace Wolf-Chase, Friday, 9-2-16 (9.85MB; download) -- We welcomed Dr. Grace Wolf-Chase, an Astronomer at the Adler Planetarium at the University of Chicago, to our program. In the first segment of our 90 minute program, Dr. Wolf-Chase introduced us to the Adler Planetarium and many of its in-house and out reach programs. Some of the programs have an online presence with more coming out in that format. We also talked about the 50th anniversary of Star Trek which is coming up and the significance of Star Trek both on our guest and on many others influencing them in their conduct, academic studies and careers. We also talked about many of the astronomy related academic fields of study, why Antares is the favorite star of our guest plus lots more. This program touched on a variety of space topics and recent Space Show programs. For example, John Hunt called with his analysis so far of the GEM Unification Theory proposed by recent Space Show guest Dr. John Brandenburg. John's comments were physics oriented. Marshall called to reference the recent Dr. Doug Plata show, spinning, artificial gravity, how dancers and circus members do it to avoid being dizzy plus any possible application of this to long duration spaceflight. In the second segment, Kim called to discuss Proxima B and the possibility of finding some sort of life there. She also brought up possible technology advances through Breakthrough Starshot. During Kim's called, Doug was sending in answers to some of the questions that were being asked about travel time to Proxima B using advanced propulsion and more. Kim also asked me about my Space Show book plans which I discussed on freely including the financial challenges and some recent injury setbacks. Add this to another station Dr. Robert (Bob) Zubrin, Tuesday, 8-23-16 (10.35MB; download) -- We welcomed back Dr. Bob Zubrin for a full 90 minute program rather than the announced shorter 60 minute program. Dr. Zubrin started our discussion by talking about the upcoming Mars Society Conference Sept. 22-25 in Washington, DC. After describing the conference, keynote speakers, the planned debates, and the various presenter tracks, Bob began answering listener questions. Such questions ranged from the rate of progress being made on getting humans to Mars to SpaceX & Musk plans for Mars, the use of the SLS and possibly the Falcon Heavy, & the risk of waiting too long to do it causing missed opportunities. Marshall called to ask about Europe, Bob offered his perspective on the presidential race and going to Mars, then Kim called to suggest that going to the Moon might be more inspirational than Mars. Doug emailed in about possible Zubrin collaboration with those supporting lunar settlement. Bob said he would and described how he thought such collaboration might work out. We took a call from Paris, France supporting on orbit colonies over going to Mars. Artificial gravity & NASA were discussed as was using SEP, ion thrusters, and more. Alan wanted to know about dual use with the DOD for space security & a NASA humans to Mars mission. Tim was the last caller asking about the small nuclear power reactors being developed at Marshall.
