Add this to another station Managing Your Boss - Part 1 (17.96MB; download) -- We had intended to cover Managing Upwards back in December, during our sessions on writing reviews. As it turned out, while we barely scratched the surface on how to do reviews, it nevertheless took us FOUR casts. We didn't want to delay those casts, obviously, in light of their time sensitivity. So, we delayed this topic until now. Managing Upwards for the most part boils down to Creating a Good Relationship with Your Boss. "Managing Your Boss" is somewhat of a misnomer in our world view; tell your boss that you're managing them and see what kind of look you get. :-) There is a lot to be said about politics in organizations, and whom you should know and whom you should stay in touch with. We've found that those topics don't lend themselves easily to a simple cast if we want to give you actionable guidance. That IS what we're about, after all. There are FIVE areas that we recommend you focus on in your relationship with your boss. Boss Goals Boss Communications Boss Schedule/Time Management Boss Work style Boss Relationships Today, we give a brief example of what negative consequences can occur as a result of NOT paying attention to these. We then discuss Boss Goals and Boss Communications. We'll cover the other three areas on our next podcast.

Add this to another station One on Ones for the DIRECT (16.10MB; download) -- How can you have a great One on One with your boss? How can you get the the most out of the most valuable recurring communication investment you make? This is an important question ... and it seems that a lot of managers DO NOT ask it. Some of the managers who are quite good at running their OWN O3s aren't very good at getting the most out of their time with their boss. Frankly, we think that if they reported to themselves, they'd be disappointed in their direct. ;-) We've been watching managers for years, and we have some recommendations for how you can be most effective when you're the direct. (But to be clear: We never recommend managing your boss. Never.) One additional note here: If you are NEW to Manager Tools, the concept of the One on One may not be completely familiar. If so, we recommend you go back and listen to those casts first. While you're at it, you may want to reference the Manager Tools "Basics" series for the core podcasts outlining our basic thoughts and fundamental practices of effective management.

Add this to another station Boss One-on-Ones - Professional Updates (25.03MB; download) -- This cast describes a way to approximate One on Ones (O3s) with your boss. We've been asked this question so many times, it's really amazing that we've waited this long to publicize widely the same answer we've given so many listeners and members. We know, we know: you want to have One on Ones with your boss. But, unless your boss has initiated them with you first, we don't recommend you try to do so. Really!
